How to measure your marketing by booked jobs, not rankings
Rankings and impressions are easy to report and easy to misread. They tell you people saw your name. They do not tell you whether anyone booked. Here is a straightforward way to measure the number that matters.
Define a booked job
Pick the event you care about: an estimate scheduled, a service call booked or a job sold. Use the same definition every month, and write it down. If the definition keeps changing, the trend means nothing.
Track every way a lead reaches you
- Phone calls, with a tracking number for each source you want to compare.
- Website forms, with the source recorded when the form is submitted.
- Text messages and missed calls, logged in one place.
- Google Business Profile calls and direction requests.
Record the source when the lead arrives
Ask how each new customer found you and write the answer in your CRM alongside what the tracking says. The two do not always match, and the gap is useful information. A customer may say “Google” after clicking a paid ad, seeing the profile and then calling.
Follow the lead to the outcome
A lead is not a booked job. Mark each one as booked, quoted, lost or still open. Then you can see how many calls turn into work and how long that takes. A source that sends many calls but few jobs is worth less than one that sends fewer, better calls.
Read the numbers monthly
- How many leads came from each source?
- How many of them became booked jobs?
- What did each booked job cost, by source?
- Which sources should get more budget, and which less?
Know the limits
Small numbers move around a lot. A single week can look great or awful for reasons that have nothing to do with marketing. Look at three months of data before you change strategy. Also remember that clicks are visits to a website, not calls, and calls from the Google Business Profile are a separate measurement.
We build this tracking for clients and report on it in one dashboard. If you want to see how it would look for your business, book a strategy call.
