SEO, local SEO or PPC: where should a small business start?
The three channels solve different problems, and mixing them up is a common reason marketing feels like it is not working. Here is what each one does and how to pick a starting point.
What each one does
- SEO helps your website pages appear in regular search results for the things people type. It builds slowly and keeps working.
- Local SEO focuses on the map results and your Google Business Profile for searches with local intent, such as “plumber near me”.
- PPC puts paid ads at the top of search results. It brings leads quickly and stops when the budget stops.
If you serve a local area, start with local SEO
Service-area and storefront businesses get many of their calls from the map results. A complete profile, steady reviews and accurate business details are the base, and they cost far less than a big ad budget. Do this first.
If you need leads this month, add PPC
SEO takes time. If a slow season is coming or your calendar is empty now, search ads can fill the gap while the slower work builds. Only run them with call tracking in place, or you will not know what you are paying for.
If people research before they call, invest in SEO
Bigger jobs, such as remodels, roof replacements or system installs, often start with research. Pages that answer the questions buyers ask can bring in those visitors over time. This is the slowest channel, and it rewards patience.
A simple way to decide
- Fix the Google Business Profile and website basics.
- Add call and form tracking so you can see where leads come from.
- Run search ads if you need leads soon and can track them.
- Build service and town pages for long-term search traffic.
Do they work together?
Yes. Ads show you which searches turn into calls, and that tells you which pages to build. Local SEO and reviews improve how people see you once they find you. That is why we report all of them in one dashboard.
