How to choose a home service marketing agency
Most agencies pitch the same way: a big promise, a deck full of channels, and a monthly report you will not read. If you run a plumbing, roofing, HVAC or electrical company, you need something simpler. You want the phone to ring and the calendar to fill. This list covers what to ask before you sign.
Ask what they report on
Rankings, impressions and clicks show activity. They do not show whether a customer called. Ask to see a sample report. If it leads with keyword positions and traffic and never mentions calls, form fills or booked jobs, the agency is measuring its own work instead of your results.
A good report ties each lead back to where it came from: the Google Business Profile, an organic search, a paid ad or your website form. That is the only way to decide where the next dollar should go.
Ask how they charge
A percentage of your ad spend pays the agency more when you spend more, whether or not the spending works. A fixed management fee removes that conflict. Ask what is included, what costs extra, and who owns the ad accounts. You should own them.
Ask who does the work
- Will you have a named person who knows your account, or a rotating ticket queue?
- Is the work done in-house or handed to a third party?
- How fast do they answer a question in month four, after the sales call is over?
Ask for access, not a portal
You should be able to open the same rankings, ad accounts and dashboards the agency works from. If the answer is a locked client portal with a monthly PDF, you are trusting a summary instead of the data.
Read the contract for the exit
Look at the term, the cancellation notice and what happens to your website, ad accounts and content if you leave. Month-to-month after an initial term with reasonable notice is a fair setup. A multi-year lock-in is a warning sign, because a good agency does not need to trap you.
Be wary of guarantees
Nobody controls Google’s results. An agency that guarantees a ranking either plans to cut corners or is telling you what you want to hear. Look for a commitment to the work, the schedule and the reporting instead.
A short checklist
- They report on calls and booked jobs.
- The fee is fixed, and you own your accounts.
- A named person handles your account.
- You get access to the real dashboards.
- The contract has a clear, reasonable exit.
- No one promises a ranking.
